CALIATA INITIATIVE
A dream to revitalize rural life in the Andes and strengthen indigenous food systems through community-led work, in harmony with Mother Nature.
To design, implement and evaluate sustainable and culturally adequate projects that deliver positive impacts in both rural and urban indigenous communities. We create tools for the reinvigoration of culture, language, native crops and agroecosystems, with high standards of technical quality, transparency, and community participation.
We know that the health and healing of indigenous communities everywhere affect the health and healing of Earth and all beings. As our partnership and projects in Caliata progress, we look forward to the community one day serving as a learning center for others, beginning with communities in the surrounding region and then expanding to visitors and volunteers. Our aim is to support indigenous people throughout the Andes in preserving and sharing their knowledge and ways of living for generations to come.
In the central highlands of Ecuador, the Kichwa-Puruwa community of Caliata has maintained rich agroecological wisdom over thousands of years through engaging in communal land stewardship. As is the case for many communities around the globe, Caliata’s very existence is threatened by the rapid progression of urbanization and commercialized food systems. Now is the time to support their rights to food sovereignty and community agency.
Grounded in community-based partnership, our initiative promotes interrelated projects that help Caliata thrive as an agro-community and continue to share their ways of knowing for generations to come. We welcome you to learn more about the people of Caliata and how their way of life offers solutions to some of global society’s most pressing challenges.
“It’s the chakra, it’s the wind, the air that I breathe, the animals... Pachamama is about all of this. For me, it’s the mother that is always with me. It surrounds me. It gives me life.”
RESEARCH & PROJECTS

Agroecology
Enhancement and Conservation
Work with agro-ecology and permaculture principles to revitalize and promote the traditional ecological knowledge and biodiversity of Caliata.
TERRACE ARCHAEOLOGY
Restoration and preservation of
pre-Columbian cultivation terraces
Through combined systematic ecological and archaeological methods, we aim to understand Caliata’s terracing structure, physical and agroecological conditions in terms of change, continuity and response to environmental shocks.
