What is the Caliata Initiative

Our initiative is inspired in the indigenous community of Caliata, located in the Central Highlands of Ecuador. Caliata, as many indigenous communities, is experiencing the overlapping effects of outmigration, population aging, poverty, and the feminization agriculture. However, Caliata –a system of ancient cultivation terraces– is also a place of agroecological resilience, community agency, high biodiversity, ecological knowledge, culture and language. While the future of the community seems compromised, Caliata has answers to current global challenges, such as food insecurity and soil fertility depletion.

People of Caliata

This is your and our response to things we cannot control; you cannot control a hailstorm, intense rainfall or drought, events that compromise food security. We can support resilient agroecosystems, like the indigenous community of Caliata in Ecuador’s Central Highlands.
